Weapons and Fighting in Fig Wasps

چکیده
trypesis caricae, a species in the same genus as the wasp studied by Murray; the numerals 8 and 9 show the elongated eighth and ninth abdominal segments, followed posteriorly by the long sheaths that hold the ovipositor, which is used to drill through the outside wall of the fig into the ovaries of the pistillate florets inside. Right: According to Joseph 9, these are three forms taken by males of P. caricae; as expected from the different shapes of the mandibles, the one in the center is much more aggressive, and has been observed using its mandibles in deadly fights over florets containing females. Left: The heads of males from three species of the parasitic wasps, with mandibles suggesting the ability to kill opponents. Top to bottom: Sycoryctes hirtus, Sycoryctes remus and Sycoscapter cornutus. Structural adaptations to diverse fighting styles in sexually selected weapons.
The shapes of sexually selected weapons differ widely among species, but the drivers of this diversity remain poorly understood. Existing explanations suggest weapon shapes reflect structural adaptations to different fighting styles, yet explicit tests of this hypothesis are lacking. We constructed finite element models of the horns of different rhinoceros beetle species to test whether functio...
متن کاملMolecular approaches identify known species, reveal cryptic species and verify host specificity of Chinese Philotrypesis (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae).
Philotrypesis, a major component of the fig wasp community (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), is a model taxon for studying male fighting and mating behaviour. Its extreme sexual dimorphism and male polymorphism render species identification uncertain and in-depth research on its ecology, behaviour and other evolutionary topics challenging. The fig wasps' enclosed habitat within the syconia makes the...
متن کاملSocial Evolution: Cooperation by Conflict
A recent study suggests that aggression between wasps depends upon the costs and benefits of fighting, as determined by the position of individuals in a dominance hierarchy.
